The design team drew inspiration from various cultural elements such as mortice and tenon joint, screen and grille, to create a space that is rich in historic and cultural significance. The layout, almost entirely symmetrical, creates a sense of ritual and awe for Oriental cultures. The towering screens in the negotiation area divide the space, ensuring privacy while creating a varying and elegant space.
What sets this design apart is its use of regional culture and Oriental aesthetics to present a sensory experience of Harbin, a city known for its crystal clear frozen landscapes. The spatial structure extracts elements of Chinese The Golden Mean, deconstructs and reorganizes the house from the carrier of residence, and presents it in a contemporary way. The towering screens in the negotiation area not only ensure privacy but also provide adaptability and a sense of ritual.
The design was realized using a variety of materials including marble, glass, wood veneer, hardened fabric, and metal. The project, spanning an area of 600 sqm, was completed between July 2019 and March 2020 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China.
The design team, consisting of Houfu Chen and Yani Hong, faced the challenge of integrating tradition and modern aesthetics. They experimented with the interior space model many times and built a partial sample room of the project on site with the construction team to achieve the best spatial effects. The result is a dynamic and rich space that increases the interactivity between people and space.
Every detail of the space, from tone to structure, features regional culture. By extracting traditional cultural elements and regional cultural elements, such as Harbin county jade, ewha and rockery, traditional screen, etc., the project enjoys a profound cultural ambiance and embraces a brand new culture at the same time. The abstract and elegant environment interprets the great integration of soft decoration and artistic works into the space.
The design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.
